This little sack, happily stuffed to the gills with dirty laundry, is the love child of a single visit to the thrift shop. That is black linen, Ladies and Gentlemen! I got a whole whoppin’ pile of it too. The crewel birds were set free from a dime store 5×7 frame and carefully appliqued to the inside of the black linen, thus qualifying themselves as Reverse Applique. It’s a technique I love for unstable things like the loose weave linen who don’t take kindly to being cut out, unraveling at the very thought.

Oh I LOVE this! I have a ton of my grandmother’s embroidered items that are of little use to us other than sentiment. Now I know what to do with about half of them! Thank you so much for posting this.

Ohhh, this is so beautiful! What a great job you did! I have a little collection of thrifted crewel work. I think you’ve inspired me to liberate some of them from the walls! Thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful idea! I’ve got all sorts of cute “embroidery” from my baby’s worn-out clothing. I haven’t wanted to throw them away, but haven’t known exactly how to save them. I believe this will work! Thanks so much.

Fabulous idea! I have been holding onto this boxy 1980′s wool cardigan with the most beautiful embroidery on it. Now I finally have an idea of what to do with it. Thanks!
