Captain Daddio swooped in this weekend and finished the sandbox project that had been stuck in neutral for quite some time. He hopped onto the tractor, hooked up the trailer, and made his way back and forth between a big pile of wild sand. Oh, it is the very best kind of sand, too – rich, pure, soft. Just the thing for burying chubby little toes or for erecting small castle domains. Or for getting some laundry hung out on the line without a little one literally hanging on Momma’s shirttails. Who would have thought that all of this was possible with some logs and a pile of sand?

I am SO in love with this idea! I’m emailing it to my husband and planning to bat my eyes and ask him sweetly to make one for our kids!!!
BUT… do the cats leave it alone? without a lid I’m afraid of every animal in three blocks deciding that we’ve provided an outdoor litter box

Yeah. We had no cats last summer, nor had any idea that we’d ever GET cats, so the very consideration never was made. I’m sorry to say that I’ve been seeing a lot of cat-scratching going on in there this spring. I have a little kiddie garden claw handy to fling out anything I find that’s not welcome in there, but that’s hardly a solution. That said, it seems to me like the cost of doing business when you have 1. a sandbox and 2. cats. Perhaps some kind of clever, similarly-natural-ish handmade cover is also in order, but so far, I’m not too worried about it. But it has been a very cold spring here and we’ve not yet even tried playing in the sandbox much.

I too love this idea and hope to some day put something similar in a “public” location and although I love love love the idea of having a tree as one of the corners I am thinking to make it round and have a proper vinyl cover (above link) for that exact reason. This one 5GA created is especially pretty with such wide logs at all different heights for sitting and climbing is truly a work of art. Well done. Thank you for sharing.
Warmly
